Receiving British TV and Radio in the United States

If you're a fan of BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, Freeview or any of that, you're out of luck. They're locked down to UK residents only for the time being. There are ways around it, but it's more trouble than it's worth and more importantly, not legal. The last thing I want to do is get you in trouble suggesting such behaviour, so here are the legit options...

Many UK radio stations offer online streaming, including the BBC national and local stations, Virgin Radio, Capital FM and many more. TV streams however are almost non existant apart from short clips from the news sites.

Note - some of these require a UK postcode to get in.

BBC America

BBC America show BBC World News, Dr Who, Top Gear, Graham Norton, old and new comedies e.g. from Monty Python, Blackadder, Coupling, Absolutely Fabulous to My Family, Little Britain and The Fast Show, which for some reason was renamed Brilliant! over here.

PBS is a free over the air and cable television station that shows many UK dramas and comedies including Downtown Abbey, Grantchester, Poldark, Sherlock, Doc Martin, as well as the old favourites such as Are you being served?, Last of the summer wine, etc.

HBO is an extra option on most cable and satellite TV packages. They're currently running the BBC show Extras by Ricky Gervais, and have shown Da Ali G Show and others in the past.

Comedy Central

Comedy Central has shown The Graham Norton Effect (retitled So Graham Norton), Banzai, and Trigger Happy TV.

National Public Radio (NPR) rebroadcasts segments from the BBC World Service, and often uses news reports from the BBC in its own coverage.
